How to Analyse Competitor Backlinks: A Step-by-Step Guide

//How to Analyse Competitor Backlinks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Competitor backlink analysis is the fastest way to identify proven link opportunities, understand your gap, and build a strategy with a clear target. Here's how to do it properly.

Competitor Analysis Ahrefs Backlink Research

Before launching any link building campaign, the most valuable thing you can do is understand what your top competitors are doing. Competitor backlink analysis reveals which sites are linking to them, how fast they're building, what anchor patterns they use, and where the gaps are. This guide walks through the process step by step.

Why Competitor Analysis is Non-Negotiable

Every successful link building campaign starts with competitive intelligence. Without it, you're guessing at which sites to target, how many links you need, and at what velocity to build. Competitor analysis removes that guesswork.

  • Understand what link types your competitors rely on (guest posts, niche edits, forum links, directories)
  • Identify the difficulty of the keywords they rank for
  • Measure how fast they build links — critical for calibrating your own velocity
  • Assess the dofollow-to-nofollow ratio in their profile
  • Find link sources you can replicate or outperform

Finding Your Competitors

Your SEO competitors are not always your business competitors. Use Ahrefs' Organic Competitors report: enter your domain, navigate to Competing Domains, and you'll see a ranked list of sites that share the most keyword overlap with you. The competition level is determined by how many keywords you share and what percentage of those are common.

Analysing the Backlink Profile

Step 1: Check Unique Referring Domains

The number of unique referring domains is a more meaningful metric than raw backlink count. 500 links from 500 different domains is far more powerful than 500 links from 5 domains. This is the first number to benchmark against your own profile.

Step 2: Evaluate Link Quality

In Ahrefs, filter for "Best links" — these are typically links from pages with DR>20 and domain traffic >500. If around 1/5 of the competitor's profile consists of these high-quality links, it's a strong indicator of genuine authority. Note that most link profiles also contain 20–30% low-quality or near-worthless links — this is normal.

Step 3: Assess Anchor Text Distribution

A natural anchor distribution is heavily weighted toward branded and non-anchored links. The optimal target for most sites: 40% anchor links (commercial + topical), 60% non-anchored and branded. A competitor over-weighted in exact-match anchors may be at risk — a useful competitive insight.

Tools to use

Ahrefs is the industry standard for backlink analysis. Semrush and Moz offer complementary data — using two tools cross-validates results and catches links that individual crawlers may miss.

Analyse, But Do Not Duplicate

Blindly copying a competitor's backlink profile rarely produces the same results. Each domain has a different history, authority level, and keyword footprint. Use competitor data as a directional map — not a template. Replicate the types and sources, not the exact links.
